Reading Comprehension Course.

This course consists of one hundred comprehension exercises. These exercises which can be completed in any random order, are completed in exactly the same way as the library exercises. After an exercise has been read-through, the programme presents the pupil with eight questions in a multi-choice format. Four of these questions are taken literally from the content of the passage and four relate to meaning which is implied rather than literally stated. The purpose of these questions is not to assess pupils’ ability to comprehend the passage but to make them think a little 'out of the box' of literal meanings. These exercises have no value as an instrument for measuring a child’s ability to understand printed material.

Each passage is a standalone reading exercise which is intellectually quite demanding for a child aged ten to eleven. The nature of the reading exercises stretches the reading competence of pupils for whom a Level 4 is predicted, to Level 5. The range of reading material which the course offers, presents users with a quantity and quality of reading experience which elevates their reading skills to a point which makes it possible for them to read almost anything.

No child who has completed thirty six of these exercises as we recommend, has achieved less than a Level 5 in English at Key Stage 2.
